What is a wash basin trap and why do you need one?

A wash basin trap serves two main functions: draining water from the basin and creating a water seal (a so-called trap seal) that prevents odors, gases, and pests from the sewer from entering the room. Without a proper trap, the drain may clog, unpleasant smells can spread, and hygiene may be compromised. A space-saving trap can also help save space under the basin or improve the overall design of the drainage solution.

How to choose a trap for your wash basin?

Types of traps and their variants

• Classic bathroom sink trap – a standard option connected directly to the underside of the basin. Usually made of plastic or metal.
• Space-saving design – also known as a “compact trap” or furniture trap, designed to fit into cabinets with limited space.
• Trap with click-clack waste – a waste that can be opened or closed by pressing; a practical choice if you want to retain water in the basin.

Metal vs plastic wash basin traps

Plastic traps are usually more affordable, durable, and discreet. However, they are not visually appealing, so they are best suited for enclosed vanity units. If you are looking for a design-focused trap, choose a metal version. Made from brass or stainless steel, metal traps are often more robust and more expensive, but they offer a much more attractive appearance.

Parameters to consider when choosing a trap

• Material – plastic is lightweight, easy to install, and affordable; metal (brass, stainless steel) lasts longer, withstands higher temperatures, and looks more aesthetic.
• Height and bend shape – the right shape ensures the trap can handle larger volumes of water without backflow or noise. For space-saving solutions, consider how deep the bend extends.
• Connection diameter / waste outlet – it should not be too narrow, otherwise drainage will be slow or prone to clogging. Standard diameters range from 32–40 mm.
• Overflow connection – if the basin has an overflow, the trap must allow connection to it; otherwise, the overflow will not function properly.
• Space-saving / design – if your basin is installed in furniture or you want a clean, minimalist look, look for compact traps or decorative metal finishes.
• Waste type / pipe diameter and connection – common sizes are 5/4″, DN32, DN40; it is important that the trap matches your existing drainage system and basin type.

Installation and maintenance

Installing a trap is not complicated – usually it requires slip nuts, seals, and proper fitting. Correct sealing is essential to prevent leaks. For maintenance, occasionally unscrew the trap, remove deposits, clean the strainer, and check that there is no leakage around the seals.
