Kitchen hoods, also known as extractor hoods, are an important part of modern cooking. Their main task is to extract excess moisture, grease, and odours created during cooking, keeping the air in the kitchen clean and fresh. A properly chosen kitchen hood improves cooking comfort, extends the service life of kitchen furniture, and helps prevent grease from settling on walls or appliances.

How does a kitchen hood work?

Extractor hoods work on the principle of extracting air above the hob. According to the extraction method, they are divided into ducted hoods and recirculating hoods.

• Ducted hoods – remove steam and odours through ventilation ducting out of the kitchen. They are highly efficient and suitable wherever it is possible to vent the air into a chimney or through a wall.
• Recirculating hoods – the air passes through a carbon filter that captures odours and is then returned back into the room. They are ideal for flats or spaces where external venting is not possible.

Types of kitchen hoods

There are several types available on the market, differing not only in appearance but also in the installation method:

• Chimney hoods – a distinctive feature with high performance, suitable for larger kitchens.
• Built-in and under-cabinet hoods – a discreet solution that saves space and blends in with the kitchen units.
• Island hoods – an elegant addition for kitchens with a cooking island.
• Pull-out hoods – a practical solution that stays hidden until you need it.

How to choose a kitchen hood

Every household has different needs and a different kitchen size. That is why we have put together a guide on how to choose the right extractor hood. When making your choice, focus mainly on:

1. Extraction performance

The right performance is essential. The hood should be able to replace the air in the kitchen at least 10 times per hour. As a rough guide:

• for kitchens up to 10 m² (volume approx. 25 m³), a performance of 250–300 m³/h is suitable,
• for kitchens up to 20 m² (volume approx. 50 m³), choose a performance of around 400–500 m³/h,
• for larger kitchens over 25 m², we recommend a performance of 600 m³/h and more.

You will also appreciate higher performance during intensive cooking or if your kitchen is connected to the living area.

2. Noise level

Quiet operation ensures comfort during cooking as well as during normal conversation. The ideal noise level is around 45–55 dB, which corresponds to a calm conversation. Premium kitchen hoods with quality insulation or an inverter motor can operate even more quietly.

3. Filtration and maintenance

Every extractor hood contains metal grease filters that capture grease. These need to be cleaned regularly – most of them can be easily removed and washed in the dishwasher. In recirculating models, it is also necessary to replace the carbon filters every few months, as they neutralise odours.

4. Design and dimensions

The hood should match the other appliances and the overall kitchen style. In addition to colour and shape, the width corresponding to the hob is also important – ideally, it should be at least as wide as the hob to capture steam effectively. For standard 60 cm hobs, choose a hood of the same width or wider.

Also pay attention to the correct installation height – usually 65–75 cm above the hob, to ensure optimal extraction.
