Choosing a Manual Screwdriver by Slot Type

When selecting the right screwdriver, the slot type is crucial. Different screwdrivers are used for furniture assembly, while other types are needed for tasks like replacing electrical outlets.

Flathead Screwdrivers

A flathead screwdriver is used for flat slots, often labeled PL or marked with a –. Until the 20th century, this was the only slot type. Choosing a Manual Screwdriver by Construction

All screwdrivers consist of three main parts: the handle, the shaft (body), and the tip. Each part affects the functionality and usability of the screwdriver.

Handle

A well-designed handle improves comfort while holding the screwdriver and increases screwing efficiency. Handles are usually made of plastic coated with rubber for a firm grip. Some models use a combination of materials for durability and comfort. T-shaped handles are also popular, offering better leverage.

Shaft

The metal shaft varies in length and diameter. Some are as short as 3 cm, while others reach several tens of centimeters. The shaft diameter is important for working in tight spaces. Consider the material as well: most shafts are made of CrV alloyed steel, while more robust models use S2 steel.

Tip

The tip is the most critical part. It must precisely match the screw type and size and fit perfectly into the slot. Most tips are magnetic, or can be magnetized/demagnetized using a special tool. Magnetic tips prevent screws from falling during handling but should not be used in magnetically sensitive environments.
